"It is terrible to be a prisoner of your own life and thoughts. Everything seems unconquerable. We have lost a loved one, but because of our incapacity to deal with this pain, we are losing every day the precious moments with the loved ones around us. This program teaches us to deal with these thoughts, emotions, to learn to live again with the present moment and the people that are around us. But most of all with ourselves." (Belgian mother whose son died in Syria)
undoubtedly you have read the saddening news about the latest terror attacks in Brussels, Ankara, Lahore... IAHV Peacebuilding has started a program on preventing violent extremism in Belgium and supports trauma-relief sessions in Brussels for the general public.
But have you also heard about that extraordinary, powerful, most hope-giving event in recent human history? Two weeks ago an unprecedented 3,5 million people and political, religious and business leaders from all over the world emphasised the unity of mankind and celebrated the diversity of our cultures at the grand World Culture Festival in New Delhi.
Through the ups and downs, we continue working with sustained inspiration and commitment to transform deep human driving factors of conflict and violence, mobilise youth in a nonviolent way, and bring healing and resilience to survivors of violence.
It is time for all of us to express our peace intentions clearly in word and action. Please find below a number of options to get involved (spread information, join us for the London 10K or Global Youth Camp, sponsor a runner,...). We look forward to reading your comments and suggestions.
Thank you for being a part of this important work.
In Peace, IAHV Peacebuilding
In February 2016, IAHV Peacebuilding (UK) and AoL Belgium conducted a Trauma-Relief, Healing and Empowerment Training in Molenbeek, Brussels, for Belgian mothers whose children had left as foreign fighters to Syria and Iraq. As it is known, Belgium has the largest number of Syria fighters per capita in Europe.
Through the training, the mothers found relief, healing, deep acceptance, forgiveness, freedom from guilt and self-blame, reduced anxiety, group support, renewed strength to take care of their (remaining) children and families, and more readiness and empowerment to work on prevention of extremism in Belgium.
We will continue working with this group of mothers and explore reaching out to more affected families and youth in Belgium, for both healing and prevention.
After every terror attack, leaders express the need to stand in unity and express solidarity. The biggest and most diverse expression of unity in recent history has just taken place: The World Culture Festival held 11-13 March in New Delhi, brought together 3.5 million people, politicians, spiritual and religious leaders, CEO’s, artists and peacemakers from 155 countries to demonstrate the power of peace and united humanity, celebrate diversity and uniqueness of cultures and arts from around the world, amplify the voice of peace loudly and clearly, and bring hope and inspiration to millions worldwide that another world is not only possible but already actively in the making by millions of people across the planet. Millions who could not travel joined the WCF in thoughts and online presence. To catch up, search for World Culture Festival videos on YouTube.
Working towards integrated peacebuilding, IAHV Peacebuilding was invited by the European Center for Electoral Support to deliver a Personal Development and Stress Management Training in Harare, Zimbabwe, for civil society actors working on violence prevention during elections. It was a very beneficial experience for the participants, who shared they were better able to handle stress and challenging situations, could act instead of react, got better focus and concentration, and felt more in charge of the issues at hand rather than being overwhelmed by them.
